Back to the Basics: Putting the Artist First
Founded by Lindsey Lerner in 2015, Level Exchange is a coworking and production space for like-minded individuals to work, grow, and create the business they desire. Focused around Lerner’s “artist first” ideals, LX started out as an incubator for local musicians and has since grown into a place for any artist—musician or writer or designer—to hone their craft.
Lindsey Lerner, a native of Rhode Island, graduated from Bryant University with a degree in Global Studies. While studying abroad in Chile, Lerner met a fellow student—a musician—who shared her love for other cultures. Despite a language barrier and the fact that she knew almost nothing about the industry, Lerner began booking gigs for her friend. It was during her time abroad that Lerner realized music was a universal language that bridged the gap between all dividing factors. No matter what race someone was, religion they belonged to, or beliefs they subscribed to, music was the one thing that was common, and that was an idea that she immediately fell in love with.
Upon her return to America, Lerner was met with the harsh realities of the music business. The pay-to-play policies, contractual imbalances, and difficulties faced by the DIY artist resonated with Lerner, who began to promote her artist-focused message throughout the community. From the start, Level Exchange’s mission has been to bring fair trade principles to an outdated and often one-sided music industry structure, eliminating the common practice of robbing the artist to profit of the system.
In 2016, Level Exchange’s mission of bringing bands, brands, and fans came together in full swing and the company began throwing pop-up shows and showcases monthly. Less than two years later, and Lerner has established herself in the industry by making strong professional connections, gaining first hand music production experience, and opening her own coworking space for all musicians and creators.
Lerner knows the value of networking and making connections as an aspiring entrepreneur—because it got her here. By opening her doors to all creators, she hopes to give breath to a new community of zealous and talented artists who are all looking to pursue the same thing: their passions.
